Day 1

Our representative will meet you in the lobby of your hotel at your convenience to start your day tour to Islamic Cairo, we will visit the Sultan Hassan Mosque, built between 1356 and 1363 AD, during the time of Maluk rule, it is believed that the stones used to construct this mosque came from one of the Great Pyramids of Giza originally this mosque was a school of theology. In this mosque there is Iwans, these are ancient lamps for light.

Then we will head to the Ar-Rifa’i Mosque beside the Sultan Hassan Mosque this is a 19th imitation of Mameluke style mosque. It was constructed by the mother of King Ismail as a tomb for herself and her future posterity in 1869. Several nobles people are buried here including King Farouk.

Then visit Christian Coptic Cairo originally a roman fortress town called Babylon. This part of Cairo was of great importance to the early Christians. Egypt was one of the first to embrace the new Christian faith in the1st century AD. We will visit the Hanging Church the most famous church in Cairo it is the church of the holy family. It is called the Hanging Church because it is constructed on top of the roman tower. This is a very interesting history our guide will tell you all of the stories related to this holy place.

Then we will visit the church of Sergio’s, this is supposedly the oldest church in Egypt a place where the holy family rested after fleeing from King Herod. There are 24 marble columns leading to central court and a series of 12 th century icons. Above an iconostasis a partition screen bearing icons of the 12 apostles.

Then we are off to the Ben Ezra Synagogue it is the oldest one in Egypt it is a place for the Jewish people to worship, there is no rabbi and a service is rarely preformed within its walls it is used by the 40 or so Jewish families residing in Cairo. It is named after a 12 th century Abraham Ben Ezra. This synagogue was severely damaged by Arabs after the 1967 war with Israel but it has been almost completely renovated.

After the conclusion of this tour we will take you back to your hotel.
